Airtouch Smart AC Controllers: The easy way to smarter, efficient home cooling

I started my apprenticeship in 2002, and in those days, home air conditioning was evolving from something just for the well-off to something that no home could be without. Through the years, I’ve seen the domestic AC systems become ever smarter and more energy-efficient with innovations like inverter technology, super-efficient refrigerants and now smart controllers. The smart controllers have always been something of great interest to me, as they’ve taken technology and functionality usually reserved for bespoke commercial/industrial ac systems and made it not just available but also very affordable for anyone.

With the ever-rising energy costs and growing interest in smart homes, homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to get more from their air conditioning systems. While ducted air conditioning has long been a popular solution for whole-home comfort, traditional systems often lack flexibility, fine turning and therefore efficiency.

I’ve installed, set up and serviced all types and manufacturers, with some controllers offering fantastic functionality but a poor user experience. Others offer a fresh-looking experience but are often limited in their features. In my experience, there is one clear leader in the Ducted smart controller market who seems to strike the balance between functionality and usability.

Intelligent features & integration – Airtouch Smart AC Controllers

Airtouch smart AC controllers bring intelligent zoning, air conditioning control, monitoring and full home integration to transform how you cool and heat your home.

Airtouch is a smart air conditioning control system designed to enhance ducted reverse-cycle air conditioners. Instead of operating your AC as a single, whole-house system, Airtouch allows you to divide your home into multiple zones–each with its own temperature and airflow control.

Modern versions such as Airtouch 5 can manage up to 16 zones and multiple AC units, giving homeowners precise control over comfort in every room.

Energy consumption is one of the first questions we’re asked when discussing our clients' air conditioning, and so it should be. A traditional ducted AC system typically treats the home as one large zone, cooling or heating every room–even unused spaces. This results in significant energy wastage.

By contrast, Airtouch uses smart zoning and “eco AC control”, meaning only occupied areas receive conditioned air. In the commercial/industrial market, we call this a “hi select”, where the zone that requires the most conditioning receives it; until it no longer requires it, the system then moves on to the next zone and so on. This ensures no cooling capacity is sent to where it's not needed. Studies show zoning systems can reduce energy use by 20–30% in homes with varying usage patterns. These studies are consistent with my real-world results. Some reports indicate smart zoning setups can deliver savings of up to 55% when optimised.

As the use of home solar and battery storage becomes more powerful and commonplace, we’re seeing a trend toward prioritising comfort and control. This is again where a well-set-up smart controller will come into its own.

Beyond the limits of a normal ducted system

A standard ducted system usually has a single point of temperature control for the whole house, with limited or no room-by-room adjustment. These systems typically suffer from hot/cold spots. The system has no way of knowing what the temperature is in different areas and no means of localised control. I refer to these systems as a blunt instrument, where conditioning is somewhat achieved by brute force.

Smart controllers like the Airtouch, however, have individual room control for both airflow and temperature and, when each zone is set correctly, can control the system as required, as described above. This allows the system to adjust airflow in fine increments and the air temperature in each space with far fewer limitations. With this system, bedrooms can be cooler at night, living areas warmer during the day, and each family member can choose their preferred temperature. The result is a personalised comfort experience that traditional systems simply can’t match.

Smart Controllers like Airtouch take AC control beyond simple temperature adjustment by incorporating advanced smart features like

  • Geofencing, which automatically turns the AC off when you leave and on when you return
  • Weather Adaptation, which adjusts performance based on outdoor conditions
  • Energy Insights to track usage to help optimise efficiency
  • And easy Scheduling and Timers to set routines tailored to your lifestyle.
  • And one of my favourites: Remote Access, allowing you to control your system from anywhere via an app. Fantastic for when you forget to turn the AC off when you leave the house, or for pre-cooling the house for when you return.

These features work together to reduce unnecessary usage and ensure your home is comfortable exactly when you need it.

Airtouch Home, for a full smart home

A new and interesting suite of features is the Airtouch Home, which expands the system into a full smart home platform. Rather than managing just your air conditioning, Airtouch Home integrates multiple systems into a single app and interface.

These features are brand new, having been released in the past months, but boast the following features.

  • Control lighting, power points, fans, and garage door
  • Monitor your home with security cameras and motion sensors
  • Receive alerts for temperature, movement, and door/window activity
  • Manage everything from a single unified dashboard
  • Create scenes (e.g., “Away Mode” or “Movie Night”) to control multiple devices at once

This turns Airtouch from a climate controller into a central hub for home automation, simplifying daily living and reducing the need for multiple apps or systems. (Borrowed directly from their website.) I’m looking into this system for my own home and look forward to bringing results to my customers.

Smart controllers like the Airtouch 5 represent a major step forward in home comfort and efficiency. By combining intelligent zoning, automation, and smart home integration, they transform traditional ducted air conditioning into a modern, energy-efficient solution.

For homeowners aiming to reduce energy consumption while enjoying a more comfortable and functional living environment, Airtouch provides a powerful and practical upgrade. Or even those who just like technology, these are a great option that should be considered.

In a world where efficiency and convenience matter more than ever, smart climate control isn’t just a luxury–it’s quickly becoming the new standard.
